The first retail store Derek Lam, opened in 2009 in New York City's district Soho, is the work of Japanese design studio SANAA. Simplicity, modern sensibility and perfection in every detail are the guidelines that have inspired the duo of architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, under the supervision of the executive director Toshihiro.

The store was rebuilt by a production establishment of the nineteenth century, the concrete floor and white walls, which reveal the brick structure, enhance the brightness of the exhibition space used for creations by Derek Lam. The absence of elements that create breaks in visual continuity develops a layout similar to that of an art gallery.

Precisely in order to not introduce visual breaks the only elements inserted to create division among the exposed objects are walls of transparent acrylic material which makes the idea of ??shop-in-shop and create special lighting effects. Also the furniture has been specially designed in wood and steel, to adhere to the minimalist philosophy common to the thinking of architects and fashion designers.
